THE PAST
In the past, people with Down syndrome in the United States faced inhumane treatment, discrimination, and abuse in institutions lacking proper education, healthcare, and basic necessities.
THE PROBLEM
There were instances where doctors and fathers conspired to falsely inform mothers of newborns with Down syndrome that their babies had died, secretly placing them in institutions.
Forced sterilizations and the withholding of essential nourishment led to further abuse and suffering.
Children with Down syndrome and other disabilities living in institutions were subjected to mass experiments related to vaccine discovery.
It is essential to acknowledge that doctors in the United States refused life-saving procedures, such as heart surgeries, to individuals with Down syndrome until 1984. Even today, some with Down syndrome lose their lives due to doctors' refusal to provide necessary medical interventions in their infancy.
THE PRESENT FUTURE
Mommy's Journey is dedicated to preserving the memory of the community's past sufferings and preventing their recurrence. We strive to support research, medical care, education, and the creation of Resource and Lifestyle Centers to greatly enhance their lives.
